If only….I could sketch and use watercolors to bring your attention to Main Street Rocky Mount architecture. I am addicted to these little paintings that capture the imagination of possibilities. I have several wonderful books in this vain, favorites in my library. I fancy myself downtown on a little stool sketching the historical commercial architectural that is Main Street’s gift to the revitalization of Rocky Mount. Unfortunately, I can hardly draw a straight stick and am an abject failure as a Grammy-artist. We do have wonderful artists in the community and they have captured some of the architecture. I wish the high school art programs would encourage their students to draw commercial and residential architecture.

We have large industrial buildings scattered downtown and adjacent streets. They aren’t very sexy but Interior designers are breathing new life into these obsolete buildings by turning them into modern office buildings, showrooms, apartment buildings, art galleries, and more. I have become enamored with this industrial design. What do you think about these adaptations? Lots of windows with this ‘industrial look.’ It beats the fire out of cold, vacant, structures on life support. I must add that I am a stickler for maintaining the architectural integrity of Main Street. I’m not suggesting this style imposed on the historical downtown, but in the areas adjacent where warehouse type buildings exist. Rocky Mount is blessed with its architecture. It is with a plan, love and determination that will save what we have. Will it be in time?

Good day,
I love your interest and passion for Rocky Mount architecture it is truly a treasure. I am fascinated with the synagogue. I would love to restore it and use it for a house of faith again. I go to Winterville each week to meet Torah observers. I have no location in this area. The richness of the history of the building and the windows are so precious and almost seem to “speak.” I have tried to reach someone about the property but have been unsuccessful. I hope to see more of the almost tangible history and beauty of Rocky Mount be restored. Thank you for your message.
