Saturday Afternoon In Rocky Mount-A Stepheny Kind of Day

Unhappy that Duke basketball is over this season, I needed to get out and make a Stepheny kind of day.

On the drive from Nashville to Harris Teeter on Sunset, “down the road a piece,” I saw gas priced at $2.69 at Citro. It was $3.01 in Nashville. I bought my first eggs in forever. They were $4.99. I’m feeling better.

Waiting in the Deli line I asked a young couple if they could help me. “I came for two items and I forget what the second item is. (Which was true.) I got the laugh I could use considering the state of doldrums I was in. The young woman assured me that by the time she went upstairs she’d forget it was her glasses she was in search of. I thrive on interchanges like this.

On the walk to Honey Bake Ham I passed a darling black child in her pink outfit and some beads in her hair. She was beside the car at the curb and was definitely twisting/ doing some dancing. On the way back I stopped. The look from Mom was — not sure what this white lady is doing. I guessed the child’s age to be ten, she was nine. Mom told me Tick Tock has got all the kids dancing. I liked that however suspect I am of the platform. I did a little dancing’ myself, and left them saying, “Keep Dancing, Honey.”

I finally got around to stopping in at Davenport Interiors to tell them how much I admire the sidewalk staging they lug out and in. It looks fabulous. I’ve written about Davenports touting small businesses in Rocky Mount. I want Main Street to fluff up their street presence.

Then it was back to Nashville by way of the Subway at the end of town for another chicken something or other that is delicious. The nicest two young employees were there – two Hispanics talking to each other a mile a minute. One was mopping the floor and one made the sandwich. The young man’s enthusiasm for even the bread he suggested, his smiles, his whole everything, makes him my employee of the week’ hey…the month!

I needed to get out and make a Stepheny kind of day. Now I must start cooking for family brunch on Palm Sunday or they’ll go hungry. One lesson from a Stepheny kind of day…. In our lives, giving thanks for all the ‘Simons’ who help us pick up our crosses! I loved this afternoon, thank you Lord for the small things that can make a day.

  1. Stepheny, your actions with LOVE matter because . . ..

    * …  of an economical gas price

    * … eggs are a source of high-quality protein, various vitamins and minerals, and healthy fats.

    * …eggs contain a nutrient for brain health

    * …your next time ordering at the deli, you will see results! Emoji

    * …you gave joy & gladness to deli customers

    *  … your conversation with the tiny dancer was a step toward racial reconciliation.

    *  … your actions were consistent as you interacted with Hispanics at Subway.*

… of your appreciation for Davenport Interiors, a business that should attract folks from neighboring towns to spend $. Let them pay RM sales tax!

    * …made plans for a family get-together on Palm Sunday. You will be a blessing to them. The time together is a valuable component of lives that are well lived.

    * … when March Madness made you mad, you moved forward & counted your blessings.
