Seven City Councilman sit in seven chairs, representing seven wards making decisions that affect all of us. On Tuesday, October 10th, Andre Knight, TJ Walker, and Lige Daughtridge are up for reelection. Sandy Robinson, the mayor as well. October 10th will seem like another day for most, but in our Rocky Mount world, it is an occasion of self determination to bring a new young voice into the Ward 1 chair.
To think that one change, the ousting of Andre Knight, can effect so many others beyond the Ward 1 boundary, raises an unanswered question: how has this one person held sway for twenty years with little results that doesn’t benefited him.
My daughter, out of concern, said, “Now Mom, you know Andre may win again.” Of course, I’ve tried not to believe this could happen. Councilman Blackwell, Knight and usually Mr. Joyner vote together, leaving 4 councilman I applaud for their courage and independence to represent their constituents and no longer can be counted on to vote with the “My Will Be Done Agenda.” Change can seem risky. In Knight you know what you get. Is that good enough for the next FOUR YEARS?
Risk the change and prosper with new ideas, energy and commitment
I repeat, this is a wonderful place with wonderful people reaching out every day to their neighbors, local businesses, enjoying a Main Street area revitalization. There are fine young voices that are the future of Rocky Mount assuming leadership and trying to create unity. They are taking seriously the preservation and restoration of our historic architecture. Neighborhood associations have taken their future into their own hands no longer waiting on campaign talk that remain just that.
“Housing is a priority, and never mind the boarded up housing that if still standing, since the last election, are still boarded up.”
I can’t vote in the Oct. 10 election but I sure have been praying and writing on this Main Street blog encouraging voter turnout. Andre Knight has exceeded the generosity of the call. 20 years is enough.
VOTE ACCORDINGLY
As you said in your post, that the councilmen elected have a say in every ward of the city, not just their own. Why can’t a law be passed that all citizens vote on all councilmen regardless of the ward they represent since their actions affect all of us.
