Thanks to North Carolina Preservation we have these photos and bit of history about The Kluttz Drug Store; Salisbury’s most significant surviving Gothic Revival-style antebellum commercial building. It is also the only known surviving building by architect A. B. Hendren. It was completed in 1858 after Hendren left Salisbury. The structure provides an early example of the use of corbeled brick, which became typical in mid-nineteenth century commercial buildings. In 1984 Preservation NC acquired the building and a year later found preservation minded buyers to rehabilitate it. It was placed under Preservation NC protective covenants and is protected in perpetuity. Now, the building is home to Spanky’s Deli & Homemade Ice Cream! Please note that Salisbury is a accredited Main Street Program.

Thank you for posting this information. I spent lots of time at the Kluttz Drug Store building, since my Dr’s office was upstairs (I can still smell the alcohol and cigars from Dr. Robertson’s office….and my friend Sam Purcell’s dad had a drug store/pharmacy there for years. Now owned by cousins George and Margaret Kluttz.
