Elon Musk and the American Tradition of Calling on Experts

I read another book! And as always, it got me thinking. This time, it was about how America has a long history of calling on experts outside of politics to help solve big problems. Yet today, when Elon Musk is asked to lend his expertise, the response is pure politics. If one president asks him to help, it’s seen as visionary. If another does, it’s somehow dangerous. That’s nonsense. The truth is, bringing in people like Musk has always been a smart move—one that has shaped our country for the better.

Preservation and progress might seem like opposites, but in reality, both depend on expertise. Whether restoring a historic Main Street building or launching a rocket into space, success comes from turning to those with deep knowledge and hands-on experience. Just as architects, craftsmen, and historians guide the restoration of our past, visionaries like Elon Musk shape the future. This American tradition—calling on the best minds to tackle big challenges—has long defined our cities, industries, and innovations.

In the 20th century, business leaders like Robert McNamara from Ford and economist George Shultz helped shape policies. More recently, innovators like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates have advised on technology and business. The idea is simple: people who lead in their fields can offer valuable insights to help the country move forward.

Throughout history, U.S. presidents have relied on smart, successful people outside of politics to help guide the country. This approach has worked well, bringing fresh ideas and expertise into government. Now, as Elon Musk steps in to assist the current administration, we are seeing this tradition continue.

Elon Musk’s involvement follows this pattern. His work in transportation, space, and artificial intelligence has changed these industries. His role now as ‘auditor’, reporting the findings, assisting the President in this endeavor is no different than the brilliant men before him who have served an administration.

Bringing in private-sector experts isn’t about politics—it’s about making smart choices. The best leaders use talent wherever it is found. In today’s fast-changing world, where technology moves faster than government rules, we need guidance from those who understand the latest developments.

The outcry is that Musk was not elected and should not be given access. These occasions are when I yell at the TV, “Has anyone read a book?” This tradition of seeking expertise beyond Washington is worth celebrating. Entrepreneurs, scientists, and industry leaders bring new ideas that strengthen policymaking. Honoring this approach means embracing innovation and progress as core American values. I trust that Musk and the young geniuses, will add to the tradition of helping where they have been called to assist.
