Imagine walking down a street where the echoes of the past greet you at every step, where the buildings stand not just as structures but as living testimonies to the hands that built them, the dreams they housed, and the community they nurtured. This is Main Street, Rocky Mount—a place where history whispers through brick and mortar, where the air seems rich with stories waiting to be told.

I invite you to join me on a journey by following this blog fueled by a passion for preserving what time seeks to erode, for restoring what deserves to be saved, and for repurposing these landmarks so that they continue to serve future generations. Each windowpane, each weathered façade holds a piece of collective memory. We can honor that legacy while shaping what’s yet to come. There are too many empty, deteriorating buildings that blight the progress being made. Why? Now that Rocky Mount is part of The Main Street program again, we should be able to move forward. We definitely need a yearly accounting from the Downtown Development Office as to their success or not in marketing Main Street and area with sales of empty buildings.
Let’s ensure that we honor Main Street’s past while creating a vibrant cornerstone of tomorrow. Won’t you walk with me on this path of preservation that builds a future steeped in the beauty of the past? There are so many ways to get involved: join Preservation Rocky Mount, volunteer for clean-up days, support small businesses by shopping locally, COME DOWNTOWN TO EAT AND SHOP. Attend your Neighborhood Association where great people are taking responsibility for their neighborhoods. Attend city council meetings to advocate for the protection and restoration of historic buildings. Share your ideas and passion with others by writing letters, attending community events, or simply spreading the word about the importance of Main Street. We must have a thriving, historically rich space that future generations will treasure.
