Rocky Mount, NC: Historic Charm, Modern Flair – Davis Furniture’s Refreshed Space

A change of seasons involves rearranging our closets; warm clothes are swapped for summer things. I mention this because on a larger scale, Davis Furniture Company on Main Street has been rearranging the interior spaces of their historic commercial corner building. You must go and see what has been happening. Those who know me from reading this blog understand that I would hyperventilate over the original tile ceiling and fans, the Chippendale railings that are found on three sides of the upper gallery, the staircase and railings.

I climbed the beautiful original staircase to see the art work that is hanging in the gallery waiting for the ‘right’ spot in your home. I experienced a twist on the story of Goldilocks and The Three Bears. You remember Goldilocks climbs the stairs and finds three beds. She lay down on the big bed and said, “This bed is too hard!” She lay on the medium bed and said, “This bed is too soft!” She lay down on the small bed and said, “This bed is just right.” and she fell asleep.

A memory surfaced and I wasn’t sure if I was only going to smile or cry too. I ‘saw’ my two parents in their last years sitting on their two recliners watching the Chicago Cubs play baseball. (Insert your own recollection.) What I was actually looking at was Longe Recliner Heaven.

Davis Furniture has the best windows in town. Below is a recently redesigned window featuring lamps. When you wander the store you will find a great selection ‘just right.’

The following slideshow features a few of many things I discovered and love. Smaller scaled items ‘just right’….. like a screen, a ladder, a beverage cart, a way cool sculpture hat rack, a table and chairs for small spaces, an iron quilt rack, flags, wine storage, Take a few seconds and click through some Davis Furniture eye candy.

A Stepheny Observation: Davis Furniture Company sits on a premier corner on Main Street. The interior of this historic commercial building, with many original components, says more than words can convey about the jewels along Main Street in Rocky Mount’s crown. The preservation, renovation and repurposing going on in the revitalization of Rocky Mount is the link that honors the past while the future is being created. You pass the architecture of Rocky Mount, commercial and residential, and out of familiarity, register little, are not interested, or are preoccupied. The eyes of the commercial windows have looked out expecting the same old, same old. I think David Furniture, like other businesses downtown became ignored because of their sameness, yesterday and the day before that. Go see how Melanie and her crew have created a breathe of fresh Spring air across their inventory of very nice things for your home. Appreciate how she is honoring the past by showcasing the historical assets she has. As Spring invigorates you to spruce up some things, have a Stepheny kind of day. Go let Melanie show you her refreshed inventory/setting, have lunch downtown, pop into the Main Street scene. Meet people, embrace the progress downtown, have fun.

Melanie and her right hand man, David Jenkins, long time employee. He is one of a kind and not for sale! David makes Davis Furniture go around. Two remarkable people to be proud of on Main Street. Put this destination on your ‘to do’ list.
