I saw my first pear tree in bloom. It seems early but my own garden is waking up. It has been a mild few months; cold enough to wear my favorite winter coats, but not miserable. I decided to celebrate Spring starting today and let the newness, freshness, and promises fill our Main Street dreams

Stepheny’s Garden Waking Up For A 2024 Spring
I’m no longer spreading large areas with mulch. I need the Landscaping folks to take care of that. I buy smaller bags of potting soil so I can haul them out of my car. I rely on compensatory skills to garden. Rather than lift I drag things on a tarp. From these efforts the garden rewards. The Repairers of the Breach downtown are working hard for the economic rewards that preserving our architectural assets bring.

I equate my Spring garden and how lovely it is as it unfolds, to Rocky Mounts Main Street area revitalization. The preservation, restoration and repurposing of each building is like the buds of my Camellia bushes opening one at a time and are beautiful. There remain too many empty buildings, BUT the reminder that the historical commercial architecture along Main Street and area that ‘honors the past while building a future’ becomes further recognized and acted upon.
The Main Street Blog declares March 1, 2024 as a great day to celebrate all that is taking place in Rocky Mount’s early days of Spring. Come downtown to eat, support the small businesses, sit on a Main Street Bench and take in what is happening that is the hope of a new season in the life of the community.
