Native, Knox Porter, (“Buddy”) who now lives in Atlanta, continues to care and support Rocky Mount causes. Civic minded, philanthropic, generous, busy working behind the scenes. I am happy to call him a friend. Thank you, Knox, for your thoughts on voter turnout. SFH

“For those who grew up in a railroad town, my metaphor will be clear. National elections, covered heavily by the media, are easily followed and discussed. Local elections are more challenging to keep abreast of. The outcome of the big contests brings change to the nation. Yet, local government officials have more influence on day-to-day living, plus their decisions can last for some time. Area leaders can keep the train moving on smooth tracks, yet if the engineers err, the consequences of derailment create tough problems to overcome.
Too often small elections have abysmal voter turnout. Examples of only a few hundred folks voting in a precinct are harmful to a community. Wherever you live, effective voter engagement empowers citizens to stand up for their area’s rights. Through casting ballots, people make known personal wishes for their family, neighborhood, and future.
Each precinct should elect council members who understand the neighborhoods and advocate for the residents’ needs. Increased participation and civic engagement are vital for cities to prosper. Make this a high priority by putting the dates for early voting and Election Day on your calendar now. Keep one of those days clear to cast your ballot.
