I am borrowing a British slang expression, one we don’t use in the USA, but it fits what Andre Knight does repeatedly. There is more than one definition, but you will agree that the ones I site will do.
to behave in a silly, stupid, or annoying way
to fool around and waste (my) time
You can read the latest Bill West article in the Telegram or watch the City Council meeting on youtube about Andre wasting our time with his “extensive remarks.”
Knight follows a pattern that is always, “Don’t attack us.” “It’s not us.” “We are trying to pull our people up. Don’t blame us.”
In typical fashion it is never Knight’s responsibility in his time and place. He has been on the council since 2003 – 20 years! His cover story is it is everyone else’s fault. He said, “We are not to be held responsible for what people who came before us have not done,” referring to longtime past neglect in Rocky Mount. This is ‘Playing Silly Buggers’ with Rocky Mount citizens.
Broadcast journalist Bronson Williams, had his three minutes. “As far back as 2008, the council talked about eradicating poverty and looking at health disparities and educational opportunities.” He continued along these lines, saying that the public voice should be heard. “We’ll go around and say all this great stuff, especially if we’re looking for votes, but the reality is people matter 365 days a year, not just during election time. We don’t elect kings or queens,” Williams said. “We elect people as servants to help us move our community forward. That is our responsibility.” (If I’d been there I would have stood to applaud.)
Do you know the expression ‘to lose the room?’ It means to lose one’s audience. In some sports references, it implies that someone has lost their control over a group of persons. Andre Knight has lost the room! Those days are gone. Playing Silly Buggers with his outbursts, anger, his excuses, working the system, bullying, and the state of Ward 1 housing is the explanation. The unpaid, $47,704 in utility bills, which he refuses to pay, is like a tattoo that once applied is permanent. The bill will probably go unpaid, but it is forever a part of Knight’s reputation.
This means that in October, there is no reason to be afraid to vote for Troy Davis, the contender who is now running for this Council seat. Consider that in 2019, Knight was not given a mandate, however large he looms. In the last election his opponent only lost by 168 votes. Unofficial results showed Knight with 748 votes. Ward 1 had a total of 2,196 REGISTERED VOTERS.
GOOD NEWS: The Neighborhood Associations are taking things into their own hands. The involvement by residents from a neighborhood is THE answer to improving life around themselves. After years of being ignored, promised, hood-winked, the residents of Southeast Rocky Mount have announced they are going to go to work in order to transform their area. They will start with a cleanup.
I don’t expect you to shed a tear over this initiative as I did, but everything I’ve read about the successful renewal of at-risk neighborhoods involves the people living there. Those who Play Silly Buggers lose power over those who care to care. I hope you have time to read the last Main Street blog post about the Historic Edgemont Community Association. Link below. These lovely people are taking responsibility by responding to their elderly, their youth, problems that arise, housing and more. I’ll repeat, nothing changes and won’t change without the involvement of those who care to care!

I don’t live in Ward 1, but I’d be proud to display “Elect Troy Davis for Ward 1” on my car! Where can I get a bumpersticker?

Always enlightening to read about RM, my adopted hometown. Lived there from 1964, a student at NC Wesleyan, until 1968. A wonderful city as I remember and more than wonderful memories.
